Multilingualism and Language Learning discussed

Mercator Research Centre organised a conference ‘Multilingualism and Language Learning: Measurement and Good Practice’ in Ljouwert in May 2007.

At this conference the report “The Development of Minimum Standards on Language Education in Regional and Minority Languages” and the recommendations made in the report were presented and discussed.

The conference was attended by participants from thirteen different countries. They shared their knowledge of and experiences with RML education. The situations in different countries were compared and good practices discussed. Besides, needs and wishes for further research and the possible role of Mercator Research Centre in that respect were identified.

At the conference a declaration of intent was signed for collaboration between the Ministry of Education of the Basque Country, represented by the Basque Minister of Education Tontxu Campos, and Mercator Research Centre, represented by the director of the Fryske Akademy, Reinier Salverda. One of the fields of cooperation is to directly support the Network of Schools.
