Teaching material

The availability of Frisian teaching material is good. The quality is reasonable. The school acquires the teaching material from 'Omrop Fryslân' and 'Taalsintrum Frysk'.

Remarks

The main problem with teaching (in) Frisian is the status of the language. Many parents have to be convinced that bi-lingual education is a 'good' thing.

Teaching material

The availability of Frisian teaching material good. The municipality also provides material but they are unfortunately only in Dutch. The group leaders also make learning materials of their own.

Remarks

The main goal with the Frisian language is to increase the understanding of Frisian and make the children aware that there can be different words for things and thus disconnect the word from the object. This awareness seems to be important for children.

Remarks

The school has different dayparts in which they teach in different languages. The schools notices that learning to write in Frisian gives difficulties because some pupils already have difficulties with writing in Dutch.

The availability and quality of Frisian teaching material is good. The school acquires its material from CEDIN

Remarks

The main problem with teaching in the minority language is getting replacement for teachers who can teach in Frisian. The school says that learning to write in Frisian is difficult because some children have already difficulties with writing in Dutch.

Remarks

In the past there was a special day on which only the minority language was used. This is no longer the case. The intensions are to bring the subject in the team again and make it clear when the minority language is used en when it is not used (language policy).

Parents don't always understand the need for education in minority language (reading en writing)

Languages of instruction

Most classes: Dutch. In the three classes with Multilingual Secondary Education: Dutch (50%), English (30%) and Frisian (20%)

Languages used outside formal lessons

Availability of the teaching material

good

Quality of the teaching material

reasonable

Main problem

There is a lack of teaching material in Frisian. For the subject Frisian language there is material but it is not up to date. For history there is a translation of a method used in the other classes. And foar the Frisian history teaching material has been written. For the other subjects there isnot any teaching material available. For English there are a lot more materials since there are many  secondary schools teaching in Dutch and English.

Solution

For teaching in Frisian as a language of instruction the teachers have to write there own materials. For the subject Frisian culture six teachers have made lessons in language and literature, art, music, cooking with Frisian ingredients, Frisian sports and the making of a ‘glossy’ with articles about MSE.
